As competitive golfers, we often underestimate the power of a consistent, high-quality pre-shot routine.
Many of us fall into one of three patterns: believing we have an effective routine when we don’t, going through the motions without real focus, or, and this is the one I see most often, reserving our best mental preparation for the shots that feel challenging.
A Story From the Tour
I was working with one of my professional golfers as he prepared for Q-School. I wanted to make sure his approach to every shot was consistently strong, not just when the pressure was highest, but throughout.
Over the course of our conversation, he mentioned how important his self-talk was when facing a shot he deemed more challenging. In those moments, he said, his positive self-talk becomes much more insistent, and it has historically helped him hit some of his best shots.
So I asked him a simple question: Does he use that same strong, intentional self-talk when facing easier shots?
When he said no, I invited him to consider how much better his overall play might be if he brought his best routine to every shot, not just the ones he felt required it.
He had four holes remaining. I encouraged him to put it to the test.
He birdied all four. Without hitting perfect shots.
What This Reveals
A well-executed pre-shot routine is your secret weapon on the golf course. It improves focus, reduces anxiety, and creates the consistency that carries you through an entire round, not just the memorable moments.
The golfer who birdied those four holes didn’t find a new swing on the last four holes. He found a new standard. He applied his best process to shots he’d previously treated as routine and the results reflected it.
My challenge to you is this: consider the quality of your very best pre-shot process. Now ask yourself how consistently you actually use it.
What the Most Consistent Golfers Commit To
The golfers who perform most reliably across an entire round share a few common habits worth understanding:
They make the routine non-negotiable. They commit to performing it with care before every single shot, from the challenging approach over water to the seemingly simple putt.
They use a performance trigger. A specific action, like standing behind the ball or taking a deliberate breath, signals to the mind that it’s time to shift into focus.
They stay consistent in their timing. A routine that takes the same amount of time every time removes the variability that leads to rushed or tentative execution.
They evaluate honestly. After each shot, they have a sense of how well they executed their process, not just whether the result was good. That awareness is what allows the routine to improve over time.
The Principle That Changes Everything
Consistency in your pre-shot routine leads to consistency in your golf game.
Your routine is your opportunity to get into the right state of mind before every single shot. Not just the hard ones. Not just the ones with an audience. Every single one.
When you raise your standard for what “ready” looks like and hold yourself to it across all 18 holes, your game begins to reflect that commitment in ways a swing adjustment never can.
