How Fear Shows Up in Your Golf Game — And the Switch That Changes Everything

“Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” — Jack Canfield

That quote lands differently when you’re standing over a four-foot putt with something on the line.

This week, I want to invite you to consider how much time you may be spending on fearful thoughts during a round of golf — and what it’s actually costing you.

As I teach my clients, your fear in golf is imagined. And the more you contemplate the things you fear, the more those thoughts become your reality. That’s the nature of a negative self-fulfilling prophecy — your mind produces exactly what it rehearses.

Before you quickly decide this doesn’t apply to you, keep in mind that fear comes in many different forms. It rarely announces itself.

It might look like:

  • A death grip on your club
  • A sense that something isn’t right as you stand over the ball
  • Worrying about hitting a poor shot
  • Hoping for the best rather than committing to your decision
  • Defaulting to the safe shot when you know a better play is available
  • Overthinking a shot you’ve executed hundreds of times

None of these feels like “fear” in the dramatic sense. But they are all the mind protecting itself from a future it’s already decided to be afraid of.

The Awareness That Changes Everything

My challenge to you is to start paying attention to when your thoughts become protective, defensive, anxious, or uncertain. Not to judge them — just to notice them.

Because here’s what the most composed competitors understand: you cannot shift what you haven’t named.

At the first sign of that protective thinking, give yourself the space to flip the switch. Ask yourself what you want — in that moment, on that shot — in order to override the thoughts about what you don’t want.

Then proceed. With clarity, with intention, with the kind of focused determination that your best swings have always come from.

What’s on the Other Side

You already have the capacity to cultivate a mindset that keeps fear from undermining your game. It doesn’t require a perfect swing or a spotless scorecard. It requires the habit of redirecting your attention — from what might go wrong to what you’re actually trying to do.

That’s the switch. And it’s available to you on every shot.
