Have you ever had a really great round only to follow up it with a poor one and been left wondering what happened? In this post I want to open your eyes to the cause of the change so you can avoid cruising for a bruising in your next round.
While you can experience some changes in your swing from round to round, those changes are never enough to completely derail your game. At least they won’t be as long as your mindset remains consistent. On those days when you feel like a completely different golfer showed up to play it is likely due to a big shift in your perspective, not your ability to swing the club well.
In everything you do your mind leads the charge. Your body does not possess muscle memory that enables you to reproduce a good swing. Your brain houses your swing motor programs and is in charge of sending those commands to your body.
Every day you are the same person, with the same motor programs, using the same clubs, to play golf by the same rules. Those things aren’t the sources of a poor round because those things don’t fundamentally change. What can change and throw a monkey wrench into your game is your mind. That’s why it’s imperative that you keep tabs on your thoughts and emotions at all times, and play with good mental pre- and post-shot routines. Routines that engage your mind keep your thoughts and emotions working for you and not against you.
I teach golfers a proven step-by-step process to help them align their thoughts with success before and after every shot. If you haven’t had an opportunity to join one of my golf schools, participate in my online training program, or work with me privately here’s one simple thing you can start doing today to improve your thought habits in your next round.
STOP LOOKING FOR THE TROUBLE!
In prior posts, I’ve talked about how golf course architects design courses to appear a bit more challenging than they actually are. They put eye-catching hazards on every hole to see how much your attention can be drawn in those directions. Despite the hazards, there is a clear path for every shot on every hole on the course. You just have to make a point to see it.
But if you are in the habit of looking for the trouble you’re going to need to start changing the way you look at the course. Combine that with worrying about how your swing feels a little different today, or how your ball flight is a little off and you have a recipe for a bruising.
Your perspective matters a whole lot in this game! That’s why you’ve got to make sure you maintain a solid belief in yourself to hit good shots, and consistently see a clear path to your target on every shot. That’s how you stop looking for trouble and worrying about how to avoid messing up. You’ll be freed up to play with a mindset that helps you get the most out of what’s working in the bag every round.
Leave me a comment below and tell me what you’re doing to see the best in your game every day instead of the worst. I’d love to hear from you!

Every time I read one of your tips I take away something beneficial. I’m really sorry I had to miss the challenge last week as Tuesday is my first match. I was able to listen to the first day late at night but didn’t get to the other days. The pre routine and post routine is one area for me to focus on so I’m feeling confident. Hopefully next time you offer a class I’ll be able to join and benefit. Thanks for all your help. I have better scores than ever on my north course thanks to you!
